After Hours News

August President's Message

Hello RAHtarians!

Welcome to a new Rotary Year!

As we continue working out of Covid we are looking forward to a majority of hybrid options and getting back to 'normal.'

We want to be active and hands-on this year. There will be lots of on site programs, service and socials.

Our club wrote an excellent strategic plan and we have made good progress. I am looking forward to continuing that and working with our club to do a 2 year refresh this coming winter.

It will be a great year making a difference as a club!

Thank you for your efforts on behalf of our club and our community.

Josh

Serve to Change Lives

The theme for the 2021-22 Rotary Year: Serve to Change Lives

RI President Shekhar Mehta is urging members to become more involved in service projects, saying that caring for and serving other is the best way to live because it changes not only other people’s lives, but also our own. How will you serve to change a life this year?

Club Meeting at Kane Street Community Garden

Snakes and frogs and rabbits, Oh My!

Kane Street Community Garden is flush with critters along with all the vegetables. Those wily wabbits can be a problem, though! Master Gardener Todd has trapped and relocated 26 this year. A record! Along with the challenges of the project comes a great bounty. The goal is 30,000 lbs of fresh produce. Healthful, nutritious goodies to be distributed through the Hunger Task Force.

A crew had just harvested row upon row of garlic. The hairy heads hung in the rafters of the shelter where RAH gathered for our meeting. With all the garlic it felt like we were trying to keep vampires away! And it worked, none came. But what did come is a new president! The gavel was officially handed off to Josh Mansee along with words of wisdom and encouragement from past presidents. Josh’s reputation for action in the club predicts an amazing year ahead!

After the meeting we planted beet seeds in the rows where the garlic had been. No space lies dormant in the Kane Street Community Garden. Just like with RAH. Maximum efficiencies ahead! Have no fear, President Mansee is here!

Member Spotlight: Neil Wieser

Please give a warm RAH welcome to our newest member, Neil Wieser!

If a fellow Rotarian asks you to hike a 14,000 feet peak, snowboard down, then go enjoy craft brews and watch a concert you might be talking to new RAH member Neil Wieser!

Neil is jumping right in and he’s got the energy for success. Neil’s interests read like a weekend wish list of activities to tackle. He’s great with woodworking. Who knows, perhaps he’ll create a boat as he also gets psyched all things water related. Swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, you name it.

A Project Engineer for Wieser Brothers General Contractor, Neil manages jobs and forms estimates for new jobs. With a collegiate background in Real Estate Property Management, Neil’s construction successes are only just beginning. The Sigma Lambda Chi construction honor society he rocked at UW-Stout can attest to that.

You may need luck finding Neil because being in the great outdoors is a passion for him. Deep in the outdoors. Where you harvest ducks and deer and plot your next moves in this amazing life. Perhaps those plans will include adventures with rotarians. Get your hiking boots on and welcome Neil to the RAH family!

Member Spotlight: Phil Waselik

Pastor Phil is finally getting to know his flock.

Phillip Waselik came to La Crosse to work as a chaplain at Gundersen Health System. A colleague suggested he take up the open pastor position at Trinity Lutheran Church. That was when the pandemic unfolded. Through the last year, Phil adapted to the virtual world, much like RAH has. Now, he said he's happy to get back to meeting people in person.

Phil (just Phil, as he prefers outside of the church setting) comes to La Crosse originally from Oakdale, Connecticut, but has spent time in all 50 states and places like El Salvador, Guatemala and Jerusalem. As for joining RAH? “It was my goal to meet new people that enjoy serving others and that are like-minded.”

As many La Crosse residents do, Phil said he enjoys walking down by the river, and his interests include kayaking as well as other sports. Having previously served as a band director for a large school system, Phil is also drawn to concert bands, wind ensembles and drum corps. He's also staying busy pursuing a PhD in Organizational Leadership from Concordia in Chicago.

Please welcome Phil into the RAH flock and get to know him yourself at a meeting or event.
