The Ugly Sweater 5k
Dec 07, 2024
Join us Saturday, December 7, 2024 for The 18th Annual Ugly Sweater 5k!

This year, the Ugly Sweater 5k is presented by Coulee Bicycle Co.

The Ugly Sweater 5K is not just a race; it's an experience.
It is a family-friendly festive, holiday-themed event in La Crosse, as well as a competitive race for those looking for one.
Participants will traverse beautifully lit paved trails, starting from Myrick Park at 4:15 p.m. and culminating at the Riverside Park Rotary Lights display, featuring over three million dazzling holiday lights. After the run/walk, participants can join in the fun with our ugly sweater contest, live music, and refreshments.

A post-race award ceremony is held in the Ice Castle (heated tent) at Rotary Lights with hot chocolate, music and tasty treats for participants, family, and friends.

******************************************************************

The Ugly Sweater 5k is the primary fundraiser for the Rotary of La Crosse-After Hours Club (RAH). As a proud part of Rotary International, our club is dedicated to supporting local and international community service projects.

One of our recent local initiatives involved providing funding for the purchase of a greenhouse at Northside Elementary in La Crosse. Our club plans to volunteer our time and effort when the greenhouse arrives to help build it. Additionally, we've been actively involved in serving food for Monday Meals at Trinity Lutheran Church, volunteering at local events, and delivering food for Mobile Meals. We are also committed to contributing to Rotary International's mission to eradicate polio worldwide. These are just a few highlights showcasing the vibrancy of our club's activities.

My Story – Lucas Herro

On June 30th, 2013, at the age of 23, my life changed forever. A diving accident broke my neck (C5), leaving 85% of my body paralyzed and bringing me to the brink of death. I was miraculously resuscitated by my coworkers on a beach, forever altering the course of my life.

Before the accident, I proudly served as a Firefighter and EMT, finding purpose in helping others during their hardest moments. In an instant, the roles were reversed, and I became the one in need of help. Today, I rely on the support of a dedicated care team for my daily and overnight needs This a reality that has required immense adaptation, patience, and acceptance.

The past decade has been filled with many mental and emotional challenges: chronic pain, neuropathy, addiction, PTSD, depression and anxiety. About five years ago, I hit my lowest point and nearly surrendered to despair. But that day, as I looked into the mirror, I chose life.

Since then, I’ve committed to living each day fully, embracing the present, and finding joy in small victories. As I searched for a new purpose, I discovered ways to contribute and inspire others despite my physical limitations. I became a motivational speaker, an adaptive athlete, an archery coach, and, most passionately, a competitive paraarcher representing our country at the highest level.

What began as a hobby has evolved into a deeply fulfilling pursuit. Now in my fourth year on the competitive circuit as a Para archer, I am driven by the dream of representing my country at the 2028 Paralympic Games. I train at the U.S. Olympic/Paralympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA, and compete in National tournaments across AZ, FL, OH, PA, and CA. Internationally, I’ve had the honor of competing in the Para World Championships in Pilsen, Czech Republic, and the Para Pan-American Games in Santiago, Chile.

Shooting archery, sharing my story through speaking, and my #SHOWUP movement have given me a renewed sense of purpose. Through these experiences, I’ve found a way to advocate for adaptive athletes, the disabled community, embrace my own journey, and inspire others to persevere in the face of life’s greatest challenges. We can't control what happens, but we ALWAYS have a choice in how we respond! #SHOWUP

✨ Bienvenue à une Soirée Enchantée ✨

Join us for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of one of La Crosse’s most magical and historic homes—The Mons Anderson House!

Step into history at this 1854 architectural gem. Once a grand symbol of late Victorian opulence, later abandoned to time, this architectural treasure has been lovingly restored to its former splendor. Today, it is home to Le Château, an elegant restaurant that transports you straight to France. πŸ‡«πŸ‡·βœ¨ (https://lechateaulacrosse.com/)
